People do not realize how much better EVs are.
These days, my five-passenger EV can travel over 320 miles in the summer and over 280 miles in the winter. I charge mostly for local driving at home. There are now 474 public charging stations in Maine for when I need to drive farther. Furthermore, Maine is now using millions of federal funds to quickly grow our network of public charging stations.
The overwhelming amount of criticism directed towards EVs in this newspaper suggests that most people are unaware of how far advanced EV technology has come to be compared to gas-powered vehicles.
Electric car ownership and operating costs are often less than half that of a vehicle with an internal combustion engine. With less than 50 moving parts in an electric motor as opposed to more than 2,000 in a gas-powered vehicle, electric vehicles are more reliable and require less maintenance. The cost per mile of charging an electric vehicle (EV) using utility power is half that of gas, and because electric motors are significantly more efficient than internal combustion engines, air pollution is reduced by around 50%. Once the solar array is paid off, charging your EV with solar electricity results in zero pollution and zero cost per mile driven.
The EV battery, what about it? It is true that adults and children working in extreme poverty harvest rare-earth metals for today’s electric vehicle batteries—as well as batteries used in many other technologies like laptops and phones—in some of the world’s poorest countries. By rewarding American battery and electric vehicle manufacturers as well as mining firms for using only rare-earth metals that are produced locally, the Inflation Reduction Act has already solved this issue.
In terms of performance, electric cars outperform gas vehicles in unexpected ways. EVs can transport people as well as offer backup power for your home, job site, campsite, or tailgate party. They also accelerate more smoothly and swiftly.
Eight 120-volt outlets and one 240-volt outlet that can power any appliance are available on my Ford F-150 Lightning. In addition, my home charging station is bi-directional, which means that in the event of a grid failure, I can feed electricity from the car battery into my house to maintain power.
I’m positive that electric trucks are superior than gas-powered vehicles now that I’ve driven the Lightning for sixteen months. I spent decades driving gas-powered pickup trucks while working as a roofer, worm-digger, and lobsterman. I was born and raised in Maine. I implore anyone who is still holding onto the belief that electric vehicles aren’t ready for prime time to visit their local dealer and take a test drive to see the newest and greatest technology for themselves.
After you’ve driven a contemporary electric car, think about whether Maine would benefit from enacting the “Advanced Clean Cars II” law, which would mandate that automakers supply Maine dealers with an increased number of electric vehicles.Mainers won’t be “mandated” to purchase an EV under this rule. The rule’s objective is to guarantee that Mainers have an ample selection of EV cars, not to compel Mainers to make a purchase. Lost in the false frenzy about people being forced to buy things they might not desire is this crucial contrast.

With the increasing quality of today’s EVs and the fast-growing public charging infrastructure, all Mainers will soon find that purchasing an electric vehicle is a no-brainer. People don’t realize how much better today’s EVs are
